Summer 2011: Get involved!

We have a lot planned this summer and hope you get involved.  If you are interested in volunteering, email Amanda at the address below.  Check out highlights of what we're up to this summer:

Weatherizing Trenton Central High School - June 17th

On Friday June 17th, Energy Service Corps members and high school volunteers weatherized the Trenton Central High School.  Check out the article in the Trenton Times at http://www.nj.com/mercer/index.ssf/2011/06/students_volunteers_assist_in.html

Farmers Markets

Energy Service Corps will be heading out to Farmers Markets across the area this summer to educate members of our communities about energy and conservation.

House Warming Parties w/ Sustainable Princeton

We'll be working with Sustainable Princeton to provide weatherization trainings at a series of House Warming Parties.  During these house warming parties, homeowners invite their friends and neighbors over to their house to learn about weatherization and how they can save energy and money.

Energy Service Corps- Princeton:

We are very fortunate to live here in Princeton where students and community members have a ton of different resources available to them from both the university and township.
But 15 minutes down Route 1 is Trenton, the state capital of New Jersey, which is not nearly as well served.

Trenton experienced its economic boom decades ago and now many of the homes and buildings are in severe need of upgrades and repair. In many of these drafty old buildings, energy is flying out the windows and sky-rocketing heating bills are forcing some residents to choose between paying for heat and paying for rent. Of course few people actually want to spend money on energy they aren’t using, but for most fixing the problems seem to carry too high a price tag or is simply impossible. In order to help community members save energy and money, we need to educate them about the simple things they can do in their homes to increase energy efficiency.

Spring 2011 - Semester Accomplishments:

We want to share our accomplishments from this Spring.  Here’s a look at what we were up to this semester:

Community Education: Through our weatherization workshop and Earth Day Festival oureach, we were able to educate 31 people about ways they can increase their energy efficiency so we become less dependent on fossil fuels!

Weatherizations: With the hard work of our volunteers we were able to weatherize one Princeton staff member's home and the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen by sealing cracks around drafty windows and doors and exchanging old light bulbs with CFLs. By doing so, we helped people save both energy and money!

Community Partnerships:  Sustainable Princeton and the Lawrencville Nature Center are two great community groups we started working with this seemster. With their help, we will be educating more and more individuals about simple changes they can make to save money and increase energy efficiency!

Let’s continue to help our community in becoming a more energy efficient place to live. Stay tuned for Energy Service Corps Fall 2011, hope to see you then!
