Energy Service Corps meets every Monday, 5:20-6:20, in the 3rd Floor Student Lounge in the Robeson Campus Center.

Here in Newark we have a lot of old, urban buildings that are drafty and cost way too much to heat and cool. Families are already having to make tough choices about where to spend their money, and having to pay high energy bills just adds to this stress. There's also a huge gap between what's available and what people know is available. Out of all households qualified for state and federal assistance in upgrading their homes to be more energy efficient, less than 1% have even applied!

So that's where we come in - we'll connect people to the information and resources, and even provide some immediate relief through basic weatherization projects.

NJPIRG's Energy Service Corps was honored by Mayor Booker for their work in organizing "25 Days of Service." Read about it here!

Thank you for making Fall 2011 with NJPIRG's Energy Service Corps a great success! We couldn't have done it without you!

This semester we made big steps towards helping the Newark community save energy, save money and save the environment all at the same time:

We educated over 300 members of the community about energy efficiency at block parties, tree plantings, and community meetings.

We've weatherized 17 homes and performed 16 energy assessments!

We've also taught fun lessons and even performed zany plays about energy efficiency, educating 500 kids in Newark and Jersey City!

We want to share our accomplishments from this Spring. Here's a look at what we were up to this semester:

K-12 Education: Our youth are our hope for a cleaner and healthier planet -- which is why Energy Service Corps volunteers have spent so much time in local Newark classrooms teaching the importance of energy conservation and environmental stewardship. Just this year, we've taught over 800 Newark children.

Community Education: In this tough economic climate, Newark residents are feeling the burden of high energy costs. We've taken some of the mystery out of energy efficiency by educating over 300 residents through workshops, community canvassing, tables at events, presentations at community meetings & more.

Weatherization: To honor the 25th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day, we teamed up with the City of Newark, Brick City SERVES, La Casa de Don Pedro and other community organizations to provide free, basic weatherizations to over 100 families! By sealing cracks around drafty windows & doors and switching old lightbulbs to energy-saving CFLs, we've helped residents reduce their energy costs by up to 30%!

Community Service Projects: For Rutgers Day of Service, we organized a CFL giveaway on Halsey St. Armed with energy-saving lightbulbs and tips for saving energy in the summer, we were able to distribute 120 CFLs to community members. In May, we're also sponsoring a cleanup in partnership with NJCDC, as well as participating in a tree planting event with the New Jersey Tree Foundation.

Let's continue to help our community in becoming a more energy-efficient place to live.
